1. General Frequently Asked Questions

Question: “What can my player do to get better off the field?”

Answer: Learn the history of the game and become a student of baseball. You may also email your specific questions to Brad@woodallbaseball.com

Question: “We placed an order for some Silver Slugger swag that I’m hoping to give to my son for the holidays. Is there anyway I can get this from you directly instead of having you send it home with him?”

Answer: Yes, we will make sure that when the swag comes in, you can pick it up yourself. Please contact Brad Woodall at Brad@woodallbaseball.com.

Question: “My son/daughter cannot make practice due to a conflict with another sport/family event/etc, can he/she be late or practice with another team?”

Answer:  If your player will miss practice due to another in season sport or family conflict, then your player may attend another practice or show up late for their team practice. Please give Brad Woodall notification at Brad@woodallbaseball.com, so I are aware and expecting your player.

Question: “Am I allowed to ask questions to the coach during team practices?”

Answer: No. Unfortunately, due to the number of players within the Silver Sluggers organization our staff must be organized and focused on the players. Answering questions or concerns during practice creates distractions, causes safety issues. However, after practice would be a great time to ask any questions or express any concerns.

Question: “I need to talk to my player during practice or a game, how should I approach this?”

Answer: Unless it is a medical or another immediate emergency, please refrain from communicating with your player. If you must speak with your player, then please get the permission of the Head Coach or Head Instructor to do so.

Question: “During practices at the UW Health Facility, where am I allowed to sit?”

Answer: We prefer parents to sit on the steps/ledge near the windows. Please do not sit on the basketball court or loiter in the hallways.

Question: “When are practices and games?”

Answer: Please go to: http://silversluggers.com/current-events-news/, or http://silversluggers.com/winter-schedule/.

Question: “There is something wrong on this website, who do I contact?”

Answer: Please immediately contact, Brad Woodall at Brad@woodallbaseball.com.

Question: “How can I find out more information about Silver Slugger Baseball?”

Answer: Email your questions to Brad@woodallbaseball.com.

Question: “I need to buy a new bat, what size should I get?”

Answer: Hold the bat with one-hand firmly in front of your body (shoulder high), with the bat pointing away for 10 seconds. If the arm begins to shake heavily, then the bat is too heavy. If not, then hold the bat firmly with one-hand to your side (shoulder high), with the bat pointing away from your body for 10 seconds. If the arm begins to shake heavily, then the bat is too heavy. If not, then that’s your bat!

Question: “What bat should I buy?”

Answer: Depends on what you are looking for. Do you like a stiff bat? If so, then get a one-piece metal bat, a maple bat, a birch bat, or a bamboo bat. Do you like flex in your bat? If so, then get a 2-piece connection metal bat, an ash bat. Are you worried about breaking your wood bat? If so, then get a composite wood bat to start. They are expensive, but they will you save money.

Question: “Which is better wood or metal?”

Answer: Neither is better than the other, they are just different.

Question: “Composite wood or wood?”

Answer: Wood. Any day of the week.

Question: “What catchers gear should I buy?”

Answer: What catchers gear feels good on your body when you put it on? Do you like the style? With catchers gear, you truly get what you pay for. If you purchase cheap gear, then the catcher will get punished for it behind the plate more due to the level of protection, the material is not lasting, and it tends to steer players towards new positions. Similar to getting a cheap baseball bat that hurts your hands, you will eventually not want to continue working on that position. Comfort, protection, and mobility are the key factors to quality catchers gear.

Question: “How do I take care of my glove?”

Answer: There are many different ways. Conditioning your glove (with glove conditioner) and being respectful to your glove (not throwing it) is a great start. For more information, please reach out to Brad Woodall at Brad@woodallbaseball.com.

Question: “Should I wear an elbow guard when hitting? Where can I get one?”

Answer: If you would like to, then you should. It is better to have an elbow guard on when you get hit in the elbow, than not having an elbow guard on. The difference is in one you are still playing, and the other you are out of the game.

Question: “I need to get certified on FieldLevel, who will do that?”

Answer: Brad Woodall will certify each player on FieldLevel by January 1, 2017.
